Work Safe, Play Safe: Managing Airborne Lead at Indoor Shooting Ranges

NEWTOWN, Conn.--Airborne lead management is a critical topic for shooting range operators. A new 42-page manual, Lead Management and OSHA Compliance for Indoor Shooting Ranges, provides the most up-to-date information on tools and rules to help operators ask the right questions, and get the right answers, to ensure health and safety.

The National Association of Shooting Ranges (NASR), a division of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, produced the manual though an alliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor, and input from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The manual provides valuable background on lead issues, as well as general guidance for lead monitoring and ventilation, precautions and coverage for employees, and related business practices. It also includes samples of the latest forms and information that employers need for maintaining occupational injury and illness records, materials that have changed in several important ways since 2003.

Rick Patterson, director of facility development for NASR, said, "If you manage a range, whether it's commercial, private, government or nonprofit, an effective lead management program will save you money over the long term. More importantly, by proactively managing lead exposure in the workplace, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you, your employees and range users are working and playing in a well-managed and safe environment."

You can obtain your copy of Lead Management and OSHA Compliance for Indoor Shooting Ranges by calling 203-426-1320 or by downloading the order form from the NASR catalog at www.rangeinfo.org. The cost is $12 for members; $24 for non-members, plus S&H.

NASR is a professional organization that promotes the development of state-of-the-art target shooting facilities as safety education and entertainment centers. It also promotes and protects target-shooting facilities by providing leadership in information, communication, and partnership between range, industry and community.
