Assemble the gun-butt carriage. Cover the 1x4 with felt using 5/8-inch carpet tacks to secure it. Leave the side with the layout marks visible to allow easy alignment of the spacer blocks. Secure the spacer blocks with 1 5/8-inch screws. Pre-drill the fastener holes to prevent the 2x4 blocks from splitting. A 1/8-inch bit will work for the pre-drilling. Also a 9/64-inch counter-bore will work for most of the pre-drilling needed on this project. Use the other 1x4 to keep the block ends aligned. Once the 2x4 blocks are secured, fasten the other 1x4 (the carriage's back) to the blocks with two 1 5/8-inch screws per block.
